While creating web pages, you will come across many good and many bad ideas. The following is a list of some of those options:
Do's:
If your company has a logo or preferred colors on its stationery that is a good start. For those of you starting from scratch, choose two or three complementary colors and stick with it.
A white background with black text always increases the readability of your site. Many leading websites prefer to use a white background with black text. Avoid using colored backgrounds in your webpages. While working with colored backgrounds, check the pages in 256 colors, 16 bit and 32 bit resolutions. A colored page that looks fine in 32 bit color resolution may not look good if opened in 256 colors.
Use alternative text along with graphics for non-graphics users.
Be careful that your links are visible before and after being visited. It is a good idea to open hyperlinks to other websites in a new window.
Have a site map page or install a search feature at your site to ensure your visitors can easily find what they're looking for.
Don'ts:
Too much animation and special effects may distract visitors from the actual content of your site, not to mention they can take too long to download. Your visitors may not wait for such a long time and may leave before browsing your site.
Use only a limited number of frames. Always check if the screen doesn't get crammed if a low resolution screen is used.
Putting large elements in a table cell you might force the cells to become too large. So limit the number and size of pictures and texts.
Avoid cramming your pages, use colspan, borderspan for tables and vspan, hspan for applets and images.
If a page is not ready, don't put it up. If you have links that are pointing to the pages, disable them until your page is ready.
