1) Get your own domain name. Having your site on a freebie site says that you're not serious about being in business online.
2) Plan out your site. What do you want to accomplish? What are your goals? Who are you trying to reach with your site?
3) Structure your site. This means do more than slapping all the copy and banners on the home page. Add depth to your website.
4) Take a long range view of your site. What will it look like in a year, 5 years, 10 years (a lifetime in Internet time)?
5) Keep your site updated. That involves making sure all the links work, and changing things around every so often to keep your look updated and fresh.
There you go, five ways to improve your website. Excuse me, I have to go follow my own advice!
